One of the fun things about writing for fictional assholes (by which I mean writing as fictional assholes, I'm not calling you you a fictional asshole. I'm sure you're all quite real) is exploring both the underpinnings and logical conclusions of concepts which have nothing to do with my real opinions.
In this case however, I think Gordon may have a point.
Certainly right now it's hard to imagine leaving our planet to its own devices without feeling some shame or at least a little awkwardness about it. But I have a question, have you ever dated someone? Think about being in the middle of that relationship while it's still going strong. You couldn't picture a world where you'd be okay with not knowing if your boyfriend or girlfriend (or miscellaneous-friend) was happy or not. Even months after breaking up, it'd feel as though you
were flying in the face of natural law by leaving your now-ex to live without you.
You do move on though. And I suspect it'd pan out similarly if we ever collectively broke up with Earth. And before you think of our planet as being at the losing end of this relationship, keep in mind, right now she's in a polyamorous relationship with a little over seven billion people. She's doing alright. Also, just because certain things aren’t good for her, doesn't mean she doesn't like it. Maybe Earth likes it dirty.
